When trust feels hard, your body may be protecting you


Hi Reader,

If you’ve ever wondered why trusting again feels so difficult—even when you want to—this note is for you.

After heartbreak, betrayal, or emotional hurt, our bodies don’t just “move on.”
They remember.

They remember what felt unsafe.
They remember what overwhelmed them.
And they learn how to protect us—often by building quiet, invisible walls.

Those walls aren’t a flaw.
They’re a form of wisdom.

But over time, they can also keep us from connection, intimacy, and the softness we long for.

You might take a few quiet moments with one or two of these—no need to do them all.

  1. Where do I notice protection in my body right now?
    (Chest, throat, belly, shoulders, elsewhere?)
  2. What do these protective parts seem to be trying to keep me safe from?
    (There’s no right answer—just listen.)
  3. If my body could set the pace for trust, what would it need more of first?
    (Time, reassurance, rest, boundaries, gentleness?)
  4. What would “softening” look like—not removing my walls, but letting them breathe a little?
  5. How can I offer myself the same compassion I’d offer someone I love who’s been hurt?

You don’t have to push these answers into clarity.
Sometimes insight arrives quietly—after we create enough safety to listen.
